A celebration of sportsmanship and team spirit

The Chancellor’s Cup event, an annual sporting event in honour of the Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David O. Oyedepo, was recently held at the Covenant University Ultra-Modern Sports Complex, featuring finals for various sports competitions in different disciplines including swimming, badminton, athletics, board games, handball, rugby, women’s football, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, basketball and weightlifting. Winners of previous competitions qualified for the coveted cup.

Notable participants included representatives from Leadway Health Insurance, members of University Management, faculty, staff, students and external spectators who came together to support the event. The atmosphere was electric, with enthusiastic cheers from students from various departments. Event partners distributed gifts to students, further adding to the festive atmosphere.

In his opening address at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo, commended the students for their dedication and team spirit and stressed the importance of maintaining physical fitness to optimize performance as a sportsperson. He encouraged them to develop fitness consciousness as a habit they will maintain even after their stay on campus.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Dean of Student Affairs, Ms Shola Coker, welcomed the dignitaries and partners, expressed her gratitude and encouraged students to support their respective departments as the games begin.

The highlight of the event was the football match between the Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering departments, with the Computer Engineering department scoring a goal during half-time, securing the victory. A relay race between all departments also saw Computer Engineering take first place.

Before the main event, the Accounting and Mechanical Engineering departments played a match, with Accounting scoring one goal and Mechanical Engineering none.

Medals were awarded to winners in swimming, badminton, athletics, board games, handball, rugby, women’s football, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, basketball and weightlifting. Trophies were awarded to the best teams in both the male and female football categories, along with special prizes and recognition as ‘Team of the Season’.

In his closing remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo, congratulated the winners on their achievements and encouraged all students to continue to strive for excellence.

Other members of the university board also attended the event.
