Cleveland selects Aidan Major in fifth round

For the first time, three West Virginia baseball players have been drafted in the first five rounds.

Shortly after David Hagaman was the last pick in the fourth round when he was selected by the Texas Rangers, another right-handed pitcher from WVU was cut in the next round, Aidan Major, who was selected 146th overall in the fifth round by the Cleveland Guardians on Monday.

Major is originally from Mill Hall, Pennsylvania, and was a key part of the Mountaineers’ pitching staff in each of his three seasons in Morgantown.

He finished 2024 with a 5-4 record in 14 appearances and 12 starts, posting a 5.59 ERA and 77 strikeouts against 35 hits.

Major missed a month of NCAA competition, but returned to earn his fifth win against Grand Canyon, helping West Virginia reach its first Super Regional in program history in North Carolina.

In 2023, Major was used primarily as a reliever, starting three of his 21 appearances. He finished 4-2 that year with a 4.88 ERA, 59 strikeouts and 14 walks.

As a freshman, Major made five starts and appeared in 11 games, finishing 3-0 with a 3.49 ERA over 28 1/3 innings.

In three seasons with the Mountaineers, Major was 12-6 with a 4.93 ERA. He started 20 of his 46 appearances, struck out 167 batters and walked 70.

Opponents hit .234 against Major in college, including .175 in 2022.
