EPS members saddle up for First Responders Rodeo

Dozens of emergency workers traded in their uniforms and badges for cowboy hats and boots as they headed out for the annual First Responders Rodeo.

“It’s definitely scary. I’ve been thinking about this moment since last year,” said EPS Officer Michelle Pochasky.

The rescuers attempt to tame wild animals through tug-of-war, riding, racing and wrestling in a series of rodeo events.

It’s become a family tradition for Constable Vera Robertson, who works as a photographer at the rodeo while watching her children compete. “It’s the pride you get from it, but at the same time, you’re having a nervous breakdown,” Robertson said.

“I HAVE NEVER DONE A RODEO SPORT BEFORE”

Constable Jeff Salmon borrowed cowboy boots from a friend so he could make his rodeo debut. He teamed up with two officers to participate in Wild Cow Milking. The trio managed to subdue their bucking cow, but ultimately returned empty-handed.

“I think she was milked early this morning. She was dry. I don’t know what was going on. We couldn’t get any milk out of her udders,” Salmon said.

More than 45 different charities were represented at the event, raising awareness and funds for the Legacy Place Society and the Zebra Child & Youth Advocacy Centre.
