India Squad to Sri Lanka, Live Updates: Hardik and KL as captains, Iyer to return? | SL vs IND 2024

India tour Sri Lanka for a three-match T20I series on July 27, followed by three ODIs from August 2. Gautam Gambhir takes over as India’s head coach for the series and there has been much speculation about what the squad might look like.

Rohit Sharma not thinking about retirement yet

Rohit Sharma has told fans that he is not thinking about a complete retirement from cricket just yet. When asked about his future career plans at the opening of a CricKingdom academy in Dallas, he said: “I’m not looking that far ahead, so you’ll obviously see me playing for a while.”

Revised dates announced for India’s white-ball tour of Sri Lanka

BCCI has announced the revised dates for India’s tour of Sri Lanka, with the T20I series now starting on July 27, a day after it was originally scheduled. The remaining matches will be played on July 28 and 30. The ODIs will begin on August 2.

Gambhir to meet selection committee next week

Incoming coach Gautam Gambhir is expected to meet chief selector Ajit Agarkar and the team to discuss India’s selection for Sri Lanka. According to Hindustan TimesGambhir will meet the selection committee to discuss the details of the touring unit.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli likely to skip ODIs

Rohit and Kohli have already dropped out of the T20I squad and are also unlikely to play in the three ODIs that follow. Despite India having played just six ODIs before the 2025 Champions Trophy, for which Rohit has been confirmed as captain, including the three against Sri Lanka, the two senior players are likely to keep an eye on their workload ahead of a hectic Test season.

Jasprit Bumrah unlikely to play T20Is or ODIs

Bumrah, the player of the tournament during India’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign, is expected to be rested for both formats against Sri Lanka. The injury-prone quick is likely to be given a period of rest by the BCCI in preparation for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand and Bangladesh, which will be followed by a gruelling five-match tour of Australia.

Will KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya lead the ODI and T20I teams?

After Rohit’s retirement, one of India’s immediate tasks will be to officially name their next T20I skipper. Hardik, who was the vice-captain during the T20 World Cup, is expected to take over the role for the Sri Lanka T20Is.

Rahul, only the second Indian captain to win an ODI series in South Africa in December last year, will reportedly lead the side for the 50-over matches, according to ANI. Hardik was India’s designated vice-captain for the 2023 ODI World Cup and was succeeded by Rahul after he was sidelined from the tournament due to injury.

Shreyas Iyer Expects to Return

Iyer has not been given a central contract for his failure to prioritise domestic cricket but is likely to return to the set-up during the ODI series against Sri Lanka, according to PTI. Iyer is a consistent run-scorer in the format, averaging 49.64 in 54 innings, and shone in last year’s World Cup with 530 runs from 11 games. He has also hit two hundreds and three fifties, including a knock of 105 in the semi-final.
