Khamzat Chimaev aims for UFC gold at UFC 308

Undefeated UFC sensation Khamzat Chimaev is set to make a long-awaited comeback at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi. Chimaev was originally scheduled to compete in UFC Saudi Arabia in June, but was forced to withdraw due to health issues. Despite falling through in his scheduled bout against former champion Robert Whittaker, Chimaev is now eyeing a title shot. In a recent interview, he spoke about his ambitions for Abu Dhabi.

“I will probably fight at UFC 308 in October in Abu Dhabi,” Chimaev told MatchTV. “The opponent is not confirmed yet, but I would like to fight for the title. I have seven fights, seven wins (in UFC). No fighter in the history of UFC has won seven fights without getting a title shot. Dana White says different things all the time, but we are negotiating (for a title fight).”

Chimaev’s title fight aspirations have been met with obstacles. He has yet to defeat a ranked middleweight in the UFC, with his notable victories coming in the welterweight division including a thrilling clash against top-ranked Gilbert Burns in April 2022. Injuries, weight-cutting issues, health concerns and a U.S. travel ban have hampered his progress in the world’s leading MMA organization.

TREND:

Another hurdle is that middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis must defend his title against former champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 305 on August 18. The winner will likely need more time to prepare for the next bout, making the two-month gap until UFC 308 narrow.

Despite these challenges, there is a good chance we will see Chimaev fight at UFC 308 if his health permits, especially since he now lives and trains in the United Arab Emirates. Potential opponents include Paulo Costa, Whittaker and Sean Strickland.
