MANILA, Philippines — Chery Tiggo coach KungFu Reyes believed all they had to do was ring a bell and they did, as Khat Bell dominated her PVL debut at the start of the 2024 Reinforced Conference.

Four years after her last match in Manila, Bell brought the same fiery attacking game with an explosive 23-point performance to defeat Chery Tiggo 25-13, 27-25, 25-22 in Pool A at the Philsports Arena on Tuesday against Farm Fresh.

“It feels so great to be back here. I’ve been waiting to come back since 2020, and it’s such a blessing to be able to come back and obviously play for Chery,” the American hitter said after hitting 22 of her 51 attempts.

“I come with the same mentality, the same mindset. It was amazing to come back and the hospitality was unreal. Chery Tiggo took such good care of me, made me feel at home and allowed me to come here and get into the dynamics of the team very quickly, they made it so easy for me,” she added.

Without Alas Pilipinas players Eya Laure and Jennifer Nierva, Chery Tiggo also leaned on Mary Rhose Dapol with eight points, while Pauline Gaston and Seth Rodriguez added five points each. Setter Jasmine Nabor dished out 11 excellent sets.

Bell last played in Manila for the defunct Philippine Super League champion club Petron in 2020, but the last time he played was due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The veteran American volleyball player admitted that a lot has changed since her last appearance in Manila, where she made her debut in the country’s groundbreaking volleyball league.

“I think everyone’s game has evolved and changed through the experience. So I think it’s just about coming in, just being humble and making sure I do my due diligence as a player and paying attention to my opponents,” Bell said.

“It’s a lot quicker, it’s a product of merging all the leagues and all the teams, and the girls are spread out across other teams, so there’s definitely a lot more competition.

Bell and Chery Tiggo joined Nxled, winner of the opening day in Pool A, against whom they will compete on Saturday.

“I’ve had a chance to watch a little bit and I feel really good, you know? They’re a very competitive team, they’ve got some really good players as well, and I think the best thing about tonight is that we can enjoy it for a very short time, but tomorrow is a new day to move on to the next point,” Bell said.

Farm Fresh relied on Caitlin Viray, who led the way with 13 points. Yeny Murillo was limited to a 10-of-48 offensive clip.
