Matt Gibbon and Lachie Anderson sign for Reds, in line for Wales debuts

Wallaby mainstay Matt Gibbon and 7s Olympian Lachie Anderson are the latest Rebels to sign with Queensland under Les Kiss.

The duo were officially introduced as Reds on Tuesday morning after being spotted training in Ballymore on Monday afternoon.

Tickets for the Wallabies’ 2024 home Test season are available here.

Both are being considered for a chance to make their debut against Wales in Friday’s international match.

Gibbon, 29, has represented Melbourne 75 times in Super Rugby and has made six Test appearances for Australia since making his debut against Argentina in 2022. His brother Alex also played for Queensland in 2016.

Meanwhile, Anderson, 26, has played for Australia A and represented his country at the Tokyo Olympics, as well as making 35 appearances in the Super Rugby competition to date.

Gibbon bolsters the front line with players who have already played internationally in Test competition (Alex Hodgman, Matt Faessler, Jeff Toomaga-Allen), while Anderson bolsters the defensive line with the likes of Jock Campbell, Mac Grealy, Tim Ryan, Suliasi Vunivalu and Floyd Aubrey.

Their signings take Melbourne’s off-season signings for Queensland to four, with Josh Canham and Filipo Daugunu signing two-year and one-year contracts respectively.

In a statement on Tuesday morning, Gibbon described signing with Queensland as a “full circle moment.” “As a kid playing for Nudgee College and Queensland Schoolboys, playing for the Reds was always an end goal,” Gibbon said via a press release.

“I see a very professional outfit at the Reds. I am over the moon because (Reds head coach) Les Kiss made me feel wanted from our first conversations after I kicked stones.”

In a statement, Anderson told Reds media he was pleased to remain in the Australian rugby team after a difficult year.

“What really struck me was the expansive, hard-hitting style that the Reds are building and being part of,” Anderson said. “It should never be underestimated what clarity about your future can do for your performances on the pitch. “There have been a stressful few months this year for everyone involved with the Rebels, so this certainly means I can focus on becoming a better footballer.”
