More locations selected for LA28 Olympics

The LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games have chosen more than a dozen additional locations to host Olympic sport.

LA28 said the new facilities are exceptional sporting venues and locations in the city of Los Angeles and the neighboring cities of Carson and Long Beach.

Badminton is played on the USC Sports Centrea top-quality indoor arena and home to the University of Southern California (USC) basketball and volleyball teams.

The Convention Center in Downtown Los Angeles, which was used as a stadium during the 1984 Games Main Press Centerwill host five Olympic sports in 2028, offering fans a unique opportunity to see multiple sports in the same building.

The Convention Center will host the Olympic sports of fencing, judo, table tennis, taekwondo and wrestling.

Across the street, the weightlifting competition is taking place at the Theater in Downtown Los Angeles.

On the other side of town, golf is played at The Riviera Country Club in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. Riviera, considered one of the best golf courses in the country, will host competitions for the world’s best female and male golfers at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The course also hosts the annual Los Angeles PGA TOUR event, and has previously US open, PGA Championship, American amateur, US Seniors Open and the NCAA Championships.

Located in the city of Carson is the world-class sports complex that is home to the LA Galaxy Major League Soccer team will organize the sports of cycling – track cycling on the velodrome, hockey on the fields adjacent to the stadium, Rugby Sevens in the stadium, and tennis in the Tennis center.

The Cycle track is an official U.S. Olympic training site and serves as home to USA Cycling’s national track and field cycling programs.

The Fieldscurrently used as a training ground for the LA Galaxyis being converted into a temporary world-class hockey venue.

The Tennis center is the home base of the US Tennis Association (USTA) High-Performance Training Center and has organized several professional women’s tennis championships and tournaments.

Moreover, the stadium where Rugby Sevens regularly organizes the World Rugby Sevens Series for the international sports federation.

Carson’s velodrome previously hosted Cycling – Track at the Los Angeles Olympic Games 1984which has since been renovated.

In Long Beach, the Arena will host handball matches, Marine Stadium will host canoe sprint and rowing events, the waters along Belmont Shore will host sailing competitions, the Waterfront along Alamitos Beach will host marathon swimming and triathlon competitions, and a temporary swimming center on the convention center grounds will host water polo, in addition to the previously announced artistic swimming.

The relocation of Rowing and Canoe Sprint from Lake Perris in Riverside County to Marine Stadium, which required exceptional arrangements supported by the World Rowing Congress and specific to the LA28 Gamesplaces the athletes of these sports at the center of Long Beach’s sports cluster, enhancing the experience for both athletes and spectators.

Long Beach previously hosted archery, fencing, sailing and volleyball at the 1984 Games, and Long Beach’s Marine Stadium hosted rowing at the 1932 Games.

LA28 Chief Athlete Officer Janet Evans said the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games reflects all that the Los Angeles region has to offer, and we are proud that these venue allocations will bring the Games to many of our vibrant and diverse communities.

“The City of Los Angeles will host more Olympic sports than anywhere else in the world, and Carson and Long Beach, which have hosted competitions in previous Games, will host more competitions than ever before. The world-class venues in these cities will provide ideal conditions for athletes and fans, and we look forward to welcoming them back in 2028.”

In the next months, LA28 will announce additional locations in the city of Los Angeles and elsewhere, including new sports added since LA28’s original 2017 bidding plan.
