RED AND BLACK REPORT 2024: EDITION NO. 24

The Red and Black Report highlights Canterbury Rugby League juniors competing in Australia’s elite and lower level competitions.

Canterbury products have seen action in the final rounds of the NRL, NSW Cup, Queensland Cup, Jersey Flegg Cup (NSWRL Under-21) and NSW Women’s Premiership.

NRL

Aranui product Jamayne Isaak and Burnham Chevaliers junior Kodi Nikorima played a key role in the Dolphins’ crucial 36-28 victory over South Sydney Rabbitohs on Thursday night.

Five-eighth Nikorima scored the first try of the second half to give the home side a handy lead, while winger Isaako’s six-for-six shooting made the difference in a match that finished with six tries apiece, plus 123 metres, four tackle breaks and a line-break assist.

Isaako jumped to the top of the NRL points scoring chart with 153 points, nine points more than Sydney Roosters’ Sam Walker.

Another Aranui junior, Daejarn Asiareplaced NSW halfback Mitch Moses during Parramatta Eels’ 24-16 loss to Gold Coast Titans.

Asi made his 35th NRL appearance (and his 17th for the Eels), scoring two goals, running for 63 metres and making 20 tackles.

Hornby second row Jordan Riki returned from suspension on Saturday night, but his contribution of eight runs for 76 metres and 27 tackles could not prevent Brisbane Broncos suffering a sixth straight loss – 30-26 to St George Illawarra Dragons.

New South Wales Cup

Linwood whore Makaia Tafua and Halswell support Tanner Stowers-Smith Saturday saw the Warriors pull off a remarkable comeback in the NSW Cup as they overturned a 28-4 halftime lead to beat the Parramatta Eels 46-28.

Tafua made 30 tackles, while Stowers-Smith made 10 runs for 97 metres off the bench.

Former Hornby winger and Super Rugby star Salomon Alaimalo was a tryscorer in Western Suburbs Magpies’ 44-4 victory over Sydney Roosters.

QLD CUP

Former Canterbury Bulls representative and Hornby Panthers powerhouse Gaius Faatili was typically energetic in the 43rd minute as a substitute in Sunshine Coast Falcons’ 38-20 win over Mackay Cutters.

The devastating forward made 12 runs for 139 metres and 21 tackles in the vital away win.

Northern Bulldogs junior and Redcliffe stalwart Sheldon Pitama scored a try from the hooker, leaving the Dolphins with a great comeback just short of losing 40-36 to Norths Devils.

FLEGG CUP SWEATER

West Coast and Halswell junior Callum Donaldson came off the bench as the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs defeated the Cronulla Sharks 24-22.

Linwoods Te Kaio Cranwell in the second row as Newcastle Knights defeated Manly Sea Eagles 26-10, with Halswell’s wood getting Olivier Lawrywho moved to the 5-8th position after spending most of the season in the center.

After eight consecutive games as prop, Riccarton Knights junior K-Ci Newton-Whare came off the bench as Melbourne Storm defeated South Sydney Rabbitohs 22-14.

NSW WOMEN’S PREMIERESHIP

After making her try-scoring debut in the NSW Women’s Premiership for Cronulla Sharks last week in round 1, Papanui is second-row Jaydika Tafua scored the opening four-pointer against Wentworthville Magpies.

But from that point on it was largely downhill for the Sharks, with Canterbury representing and Woolston Rams star Cassie Siataga a key role for the Magpies in a 38-10 victory.

Halfback Siataga scored a try in the second half and kicked four goals to add to the three Wenty scored in St George’s 36-0 season opener.
