Tour de France Women 2024: Pfeiffer Georgi broke neck and hand in fall on fifth stage

British cyclist Pfeiffer Georgi suffered a fractured neck and a broken hand when she crashed during the fifth stage of the Tour de France Femmes.

The 23-year-old Georgi fell in a massive crash on Thursday 6.3 kilometers from the finish and had to leave the Tour.

Her team, DSM-Firmenich PostNL, confirmed on Friday that she will likely be out of action for “at least the next four weeks” but will not require surgery.

“We are very sad that we have to miss Pfeiffer due to yesterday’s hard crash,” said Albert Timmer, trainer of DSM-Firmenich PostNL.

“She is not only important during the race as our road captain, but also off the bike she brings a lot to the group. So this is a big loss for us as a team.”

Georgi competed for the British team at the 2024 Paris Olympics and finished fifth in the women’s road race.

She was 45th in the general classification before the fifth stage of the Tour de France Femmes.

Camiel Aldershof, team doctor of DSM-Firmenich PostNL, said: “After her hard fall yesterday during the Tour de France Femmes, Pfeiffer went to the hospital to have her injuries thoroughly examined.

“The examination revealed that she had neck fractures, which fortunately did not require surgery, and that she had a fracture in her right hand.”
